August 25, 2016 Fishing Report
Fishing has been great from Moriches to Montauk over the past few days! In the offshore scene, the canyons are loaded with billfish and sporadic tuna bites. Many boats are targeting marlin and have been quite succesful. Most local fishermen have been focusing on the hot close-range action, you don’t have to run very far to find the fish! Yellowfins have been on the chew in the 20 to 40 mile range, and even closer for boats running out of Montauk. The occasional white marlin, mahi, or wahoo have been mixing in as well. This offshore action is perfect for a fun day trip. There are loads of mackerel and bunker pods close to the beach, with some sharks on them for those putting in the effort as well.
For our inshore waters, the fluke bite is ON in both the bay and ocean. After a few cool nights, the bass bite seems to be picking up in the inlet for boats drifting eels and some surfcasters. With tons of bait around, a few reports of albie sightings have come in, it’s only a matter of time before our beloved little tunas are in thick for both boat and shorebound anglers to enjoy, and now is the time to get out and look for them!
